  • Quarter 3 Grammar Unit: Clauses, Sentence Types, & Comma Usage

Posted by Laurel Le Moigne on 2/13/2019 10:00:00 AM

During the third quarter, eighth graders review their knowledge of independent and subordinate clauses. They then employ that information to analyze various sentence types (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex) and to write their own versions of each sentence type. Finally, they look at the rules for commas, which are mainly based around a thorough understanding of phrases and clauses.

  • Quarter 3 Vocabulary

Posted by Laurel Le Moigne on 2/13/2019 10:00:00 AM

The eighth graders will study Wordly Wise lessons 11-15 in the second quarter. They will complete one unit every other week (if possible-- at times there might be a two-week break; at times they might have vocabulary work two weeks in a row). They will typically be assigned exercises A-C on Wednesday or Thursday nights, and exercise E to prepare for the quiz over the weekend.

They will have 50-point quizzes on each lesson the Monday after the work is assigned. Their score on two quizzes will be added together to equal one 100-point quiz grade (two vocabulary quiz grades total per quarter). Occasionally, the eighth graders will have one quiz on two units, worth 100 points.
